Sorry to hear that you're finding the site too slow - it's something that we are aware is an issue. In the past month or so we have worked really hard at cutting the time it takes for pages to load - many are now loading two times faster than they were before.
We realise that on the whole, the speed could still be improved though and this is something we are working on right now. Improving site performance is one of our biggest focuses at the moment, so rest assured we are working at making it faster!
Hopefully you should find that the site is a bit faster today, compared to when you initially wrote this post, as we were experiencing some problems over the weekend.

I just wanted to add my two cents here as one of the people working on the technical side of the site. As Emily mentioned we've had some problems with the site's speed over the past few days which we're working on fixing right now. Hopefully things should be back to normal very soon.

Apologies for the recent issues with site speed - we've had a lot of things running in the background over the past week that have affected the performance. Things should be a bit better now, and in March we will be working again on making things as fast as possible!

I'm using Google Chrome (5.0.342.1 dev) - I'm literally using the site less because of the slow page loads.

Inappropriate?Many other sites have gone through this transition recently. Reddit.com just converted from using memcachedb to Apache's Cassandra and everything is blazing fast now and it took less than a week to switch.
